Ö is for Öland

Öland is the second largest Swedish island and the smallest of the traditional provinces of Sweden and is located in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Småland.

Viking Stone ship burial ground in the village of Gettlinge, Öland, Sweden

There are a lot of burial sites that have been discovered that are directly associated to Vikings. One of them is Gettlinge Gravfalt, an impressive Viking Stone ship burial ground and one of the largest and certainly most beautiful prehistoric burial sites on the island of Öland, Sweden. The grave field contains a number of upright stones, square stone settings, etc.

The most worth seeing part with the largest number of different stone settings is located between Klinta and Gettlinge which is situated on the western fringe of the Stora Alvaret. The fields include burial sites and standing stones from the Stone Age to the late Iron Age.

Stora Alvaret is UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its extraordinary biodiversity and prehistory.

Greetings from Åland
Kastelholm Castle, Sund, Åland, Finland

Kastelholm Castle (Swedish: Kastelholms slott) is a Swedish-built medieval castle located in Sund, Åland, Finland. Along with Hämeenlinna, Olavinlinna in Savonlinna, Raasepori, and Turku, Kastelholm is one of only five surviving Finnish medieval fortresses that are also considered to be architecturally substantial. Built in the 14th century, and held in fief during the Middle Ages by various nobles, feudal chiefs, and kings, it had significant period in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Like all of Åland, Mariehamn is unilingually Swedish-speaking and around 88% of the inhabitants speak it as their native language.

Pilsen. Czech Republic
Angels on the Cathedral gate got winter caps.

Severe winter in the middle of January made the citizens of Pilsen care about one of the city’s most popular symbols – the angels on the eastern gate of the St Bartholomew´s Cathedral.  As soon as the Pilsen citizens understood that also the angels are too cold they provided them with hand-knitted caps and mufflers.

Deng Xiaoping (1904 – 1997) was a Chinese revolutionary and politician. He was the paramount leader of the People's Republic of China from 1978 until his retirement in 1989. After Chairman Mao Zedong's death, Deng led his country through far-reaching market-economy reforms. While Deng never held office as the head of state, head of government or General Secretary (that is, the leader of the Communist Party), he nonetheless was responsible for economic reforms and an opening to the global economy. Emperor Nicholas II or Nikolai II, Saint Nicholas II of Russia in the Russian Orthodox Church was the last Emperor of Russia. His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. Heiki Trolla ( born 1970 in Võru]), better known by his artist name Navitrolla, is an Estonian painter whose work has been described as naivist or surrealist. Most of his works depict fantastic landscapes and animals. He spent his childhood in the villages of Trolla and Navi near Võru, which is the source of his pseudonym.

I bought some more Navitrolla cards on my trip to Tallinn.

"Alone" travelled to Finland for Anne,

" A Story with a Sad End" travelled to Netherlands for Karin.

This Navitrolla went to Russia for Julia.
